Oh no…my coffee holder! :P

Last night I had a call from this guy who basically told me flat out…..” I’m the type of guy who wonders why the coffee holder won’t work on my computer “.   Well, before crying after laughing so hard and my coworkers giving me some strange looks I hit that hold button as fast as I could before the guy heard me.   This guy had no sweet clue about anything.  Gotta love em’.  When I asked him ” What type of service do you have ” because I was pulling up more than one service with his physical address ( that’s all he knew ) he responsed with ” I dunno, I usually just call tech support and they fix it “.  Well geez,  that’s great and all but I really can’t fix your line if you don’t even know what you have or can verify it.  If you rely on the internet for ANYTHING you should at least know what you are using.  Or even better, get your bloody IT department to call in for you!  I suppose some people who make so much money could really care less as long as it does what they want it to do…and then when it doesn’t all hell breaks loose on the support.   Yay for the Tier 1 front lines!

Out of all the calls I usually get at work, my favorite ones are with the Telco ( partly cause they don’t sound like they are having a nervous breakdown :P ).  You learn so much talking to them about how an actual DSL or T1 line works and 80% of the time there fun to work with!  I hear lots about local phone companies…how there service is so bad…there support stinks so much…why the $%#@!^ is my line not working yet!!!  But you have to give them credit for what they do.  Those guys and gals crawl into a manhole to repair joe shmoe’s line because he’s apparently losing ” millions and millions ” of dollars.  Cmon, they deserve some respect!  I know it’s their job but still…to have to first pump out a manhole cause the thing is usually full of water ( which causes the line to go down in the first place ).  Then to go through all the pairs on the line to check to see what has a signal and what doesn’t with a tester from the telco centre is a hell of alot of work.  And sometimes even to do this in the dark!  Of course there are alot of occasions where they just can’t go out due to unsafe conditions.  I’ve really given some thought about the job myself but I’m not sure I could handle it.  So here’s to you workers of the ILEC’s!  You keep our telecommunication world going!  :D

Tis Monday…another glorious day of work

I guess I didn’t mention it before…but I work the graveyard shift.   And it’s not because I actually like the shift but the fact that well…there are less people calling in over that time period for one.  Also we get a little bonus for working overnight which helps.  Graveyard shifts are something I will probably never get used to sleepwise.  We were not made to sleep during the day and stay up all night, that’s for sure.  Every week between Monday – Wednesday there is one day in there where I just cannot keep my eyes open…it’s literally impossible.  And it’s funny that if I even get 10-12 hours of sleep that day it makes no difference whatsoever.  Those days I usually end up getting some of these little bottled energy drinks ( http://www.5hourenergy.com/ ).  They do what they say, that’s for sure.  Someone at work says the tourine in them isn’t good for you though but I could really care less as long as I can function in some way. :P
